From the beginning of her time at Franciscan University, Olivia Janney’s professors stressed the importance of internships in her field. After several internships throughout college, Olivia secured an internship with GEI Consultants which turned into a full-time position working on their geotechnical and structural design team.
With a special interest in structural design, Olivia gets to work with her passion daily. She currently aids in the design and management of ground improvement work for multiple projects around Washington, D.C. One of the projects involves the construction of restaurants and high-rise apartments at The Wharf in Washington, D.C.
In her formation at Franciscan, Olivia found her academics to be rigorous but unique.
“My professors expected a lot, but they cared about each student individually,” Janney said.
Olivia found community through involvement with the soccer team and experienced profound faith formation while at Franciscan.
“The community and atmosphere on campus, you can’t find that anywhere else,” she said.
By enrolling in Franciscan University’s dual-degree engineering program, Olivia spent two years at Franciscan University taking engineering-related courses, then transferred to The Catholic University of America, graduating summa cum laude and honored as valedictorian for the Civil Engineering Department. She also received a bachelor of science degree in Mathematical Science from Franciscan University. At CUA, she focused on research and collaborated with a team of her peers to engineer a water filter to aid the residents of Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
“The Bioinformatics Certificate provided me with the fundamental tools used in biomedical research and gave me an insight into how scientists make sense of biological data and develop new cancer biomarkers. Scientists use such an analytical method to develop personalized vaccines, identify molecular mechanisms of tumor behavior, and create check-point inhibitor drugs.”
“The professors at Franciscan really went out of their way to ensure that I was exposed to multiple research opportunities, not only at Franciscan, but also all over the world. The research experiences a person has in their undergraduate career set them apart in graduate school, and Franciscan excels in giving their students those opportunities.”

For some students, a traditional public school just won’t work. Due to academic, behavioral or social issues, they aren’t accepted or don’t choose to attend. In Phoenix, Arizona, those students can come to Hope High School, a small alternative public charter school where Chris Buehnerkemper ’13 teaches math. With an interest in computers and education, Chris initially began his studies at Franciscan University in computer science. “Then I took the Foundations in Education course with Dr. Boury and said ‘Wow — I need to be in education!’” Chris was inspired by Dr. Tiffany Boury’s passion for teaching and her expertise in middle school and special education and the way she adapted her course to meet the interests of those wanting to teach high school.
